Media Watch

September 29, 2010

I believe everyone should watch the program “Media Watch” on ABC TV on a regular basis . It helps to make us aware  that whatever the media says is not always true and can instead be misleading. It is an important reminder to us that we should not believe everything we hear and read from all forms of media . It can teach us to be discerning about what we read and hear and to realise that much of what is presented to us from the media often has personal interest groups and financial backing from particular parties and media owners involved. It can also alert us to propaganda bias and untruths that can be perpetrated to us through the media.

Let us try to take a step back and think for ourselves instead of being automatically brainwashed by whatever the media says. It can also be wise to obtain our information or news from a variety of reputable sources and not just from sensationalised or commercial ones.

The program “Media Watch” can be viewed on ABC1 TV on Monday 9.20pm and repeated on Wed 12.25 am

Post Office Opening Hours

February 5, 2010

I think Post Offices should be open on Saturdays especially for those people who work 9-5pm on weekdays who may not get time in their lunch hour to go to the Post Office for any major visits or jobs.

The lunch hour at work was formerly used for the purpose of having lunch and a rest or break from work. However because a lot of services are not open on Saturdays the lunch hour has often become the time of day when workers have to try and cram in all their personal business they have to do.

The only other time to do this is when they have a day off. Perhaps this is why some people take sick days off – so they can do all their personal business and errands they cannot cram into their 30 minute lunch break.

Hearing Aid Upgrade Needed

January 25, 2010

I have become aware of the need for hearing aid technology to advance in a much bigger way. There is so much research that goes into making computers faster and more clever and yet the production of hearing aids seems to be still quite far behind.

This is what is needed:-

Hearing aids which can help to eliminate background noise so it is more comfortable and pleasant for the wearers to use. They should also be made cheaper and more affordable instead of the astronomical prices that have to be paid for them at present. Surely in this day and age more advanced and high tech hearing aids should have been developed by now.  BTW this is not for myself but for people I know who have to wear these contraptions.

Also I believe there is a great need for someone to design a good touch sensitive keyboard that can fold up and collapse into a suitcase which is lightweight and easily carried by female solo artist musicians and singers. But it has to be a decent light weight keyboard not just a roll out foam version which is on the market at present . I can’t see that this would be overly difficult for industrial designers today.

If any of you inventors or designers out there do come up with a neeeded solution please contact me.

Oz Recycle

May 26, 2009

Newly weds? About to be married? Or just expanding the needs of a growing family? You might find a useful freebie in the form of a household item or piece of furniture at the website  http://www.ozrecycle.com/ “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure” – so say dedicated green recyclers. On the other hand if you feel you need to get rid of something in your home but find it’s  still too good to end up as land fill, you could donate it here for someone else to find good use for it, making it a win-win for everybody.

Mobile Phones – 5 Useful Facts

April 25, 2009

There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies.
Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival. Check out the things that you can do with it:

FIRST
Emergency
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112.

If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile; network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

SECOND
Have you locked your keys in the car?
Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their mobile phone from your cell phone…

Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end.

Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you.

Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other ‘remote’ for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

THIRD
Hidden Battery Power
Imagine your mobile battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370#
Your mobile will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery.

This reserve will get charged when you charge your mobile next time.

FOURTH
How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?
To check your Mobile phone’s serial number, key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 #

A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset.

Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code.

They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless.

You probably won’t get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can’t use/sell it either.

If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.

FIFTH
ATM – PIN Number Reversal – Good to Know
If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your PIN # in reverse.

For example, if your pin number is 1234, then you would put in 4321.

The ATM system recognises that your PIN number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine.

The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to the location.

This information was recently broadcast on CTV by Crime Stoppers
however it is seldom used because people just don’t know about it.

Apologies

March 9, 2009

Apologies if you have been sent 4 copies of my blog email. This was not supposed to happen. I have had to sort my mailing list into different groups since it is becoming very large and hence it is mistakenly sending out duplicated emails. I will try to rectify this error ASAP. Thanks for your patience.
